What are Dental Implants?
A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. Dental implants act as a replacement for missing roots of a tooth. A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed beneath the surface of your gums. They are made of medical grade titanium. Because titanium is biocompatible, each implant is able to naturally fuse with the bone to provide the area with unmatched support and stability.
Once the implants heal by a process called as ‘osseointegration’, restorations (like crowns, bridges or hybrids) are custom-made for ideal esthetics and function, which are then attached to the dental implants, completing your smile!
Am I a candidate for dental implants?
The ideal candidate for dental implants is a non-smoker, has healthy gums, has sufficient bone volume in their jaw to support an implant, and no medical problems. However, it does not mean implants are not possible otherwise.
During your first visit at Dental Lavelle, one of our doctors will evaluate you chairside and take a detailed medical history. For determining your bone volume, we will give you a prescription for getting a CBCT Scan (Cone Beam CT Scan) which is a 3 dimensional volumetric scan of your upper and/or lower jaw. Once we have this, a detailed consult with be performed by Dr. Druthil Belur, who can show you your plan using a state of the art virtual planning software explaining the steps and custom selecting your implant.
What brand of implants do we use?
There are over 200 manufacturers of implants worldwide. We use a company called ‘Straumann’, regarded as the #1 implant company worldwide. They are a Swiss company headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Established in 1954, Straumann has been manufacturing implants for decades. With years of experience in research, manufacturing and high-quality products, Straumann implants are highly innovative, durable and safe.
While there are other excellent manufacturers of Dental Implants, Dr. Druthil Belur uses only Straumann Implants. He is a Key Opinion Leader for Straumann India and is one of the few U.S. trained Prosthodontists with formal surgical implant training in all of Asia. He is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (www.iti.org) and has provided hand-on workshops, seminars and lectures to dentists all over India.

Dr. Druthil Belur

Dr. Druthil Belur is a Prosthodontist. He is amongst a handful of U.S. trained Prosthodontists in Asia. His speciality includes smile makeovers, cosmetic dentistry, complex reconstructions, and implant dentistry. He obtained his Master’s at Baylor College of Dentistry (Dallas, USA) and his DMD at Goldman School of Dental Medicine (Boston, USA). Originally from Bangalore, he graduated with a BDS in 2003 at R.V. Dental College, Bangalore. He is currently licensed to practice in California, and is an active member of various organizations in the United States. After practicing in Boston, Dallas and San Francisco for over 15 years, he moved back to India in 2018 as the Clinical Director at Dental Lavelle.
Dr. Druthil has practiced in some of the best private practices in the Boston area for 10 years. He served as clinical faculty for two years at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and has attended over 600 hours of Continuing Dental Education (seminars, conferences, hands-on training, and workshops) in the United States. He has published in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry (a Tier 1 journals in the U.S.) and has presented at various conferences and meetings in the United States and India. He is also a certified dental technician (CDT) in the U.S.

Dr. Balasubramanya Kumar

Dr. Kumar is an Oral & Maxillo-facial surgeon. He graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor in Dental Surgery (Bangalore, India) and in 2003 with post-graduate masters in Oral & Maxillo-facial Surgery. He has obtained an international fellowship in Oral Surgery from IAOMS (International Association of Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgeons) and has been in private practice for over 15 years. His interests include cosmetic Dento-facial and ortho-gnathic surgeries. He is currently the General Secretary of the Karnataka Association of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeons. He has Hospitals privileges in a number of leading hospitals in Bangalore and has over 25 publications in national and international journals.
Dr. Akshay Kumarswamy

Dr Akshay Kumarswamy completed his BDS from the College of Dental Sciences, (Davangere, India). He then went to Boston (USA) in 2008 and did a 1-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry.
He followed this up with a Master’s Degree in Periodontics and Implantology from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (USA), which is considered among the top 5 dental colleges in the world. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Diplomate and a Fellow of the International College of Oral Implantologists.
He is licensed to practice dentistry in the USA and India. His desire to serve the people of India brought him back from the US after spending almost 10 years there. He has lectured extensively about Periodontics and Implantology all over India. He is a director of the International Team of Implantology Study Club in Mumbai.
